FPGA engineers are a skillset within the broader Electronic engineering field. Covnetics continues to need and develop talented new FPGA engineers to provide our customers with FPGA design services (https://covnetics.com/careers).  We like many other businesses in the UK are struggling to recruit new talent into engineering.  This shortage applies to both SME’s like ourselves as well as large Tier 1 international organisations.  We all need FPGA engineers and there is a shortage in the UK.  This is traced back to what we call ‘grass roots’, that is getting the younger generation interested in electronics from as young an age as possible.

This is where the UK Electronics Skills Foundation, UKESF (https://www.ukesf.org/) comes in.  We can’t put it any better than they have “We are the voice for skills in the Electronics Industry. Through engagement with Schools, Universities and Industry, it is our mission to encourage more young people to study Electronics and to pursue careers in the sector.”.  This is especially true when trying to enthuse girls into electronics where there is a large disparity to boys.

What can we do ?  As a start we’ve provided a corporate donation to support the UKESF – this will help them to continue their good work which may take some time to come to fruition, but we all know it is the right thing to do.  If you’re interested in donating or just finding out more about what UKESF does, then contact Stewart Edmondson at UKESF.
